Collage and Process I took to create my Movie Theater

Sections and Plans for the Movie Theater

Interior and Exterior Rendering of the Theater

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

While creating this chaotic effect on the outside, i have created a very soft and subtle effect in the inside of each theater, so people can relax and watch movies.

My Food plaza has a more elegant design to it, i did this to create the feeling of tranquility and view from the glass window how everything crumbles and see the people circulation from theater to bar and in and out.

Rendering of how the theater looks on the site and how from the street view you can see chaos

Only by getting closer can you see the dramatic effect of the explosion and see the chaos caused by an imaginary explosion.

This is a view of the interior space and how the circulation is encased in glass, this is to create the sensation of protection from the outside which is coming to an end.

These are the section through the site which is underground, and also a view at how the seating are angled to get the best view in the theater. We can also see the Food Plaza to the right and its mezzanine space.

This is the typical Flr plan for my theater space, having the central core connect to every theater, bar and food plaza. Most of the circulation space is covered and you can see to below.

This is my 1st Flr plan, which is only connected to the bars and the food plaza. Theaters are located below ground connected to a central elevator core.

Material Testing

Pushing the boundary of materials to create the simulation of the destructive force of an explosion. This is to be done with Bright orange LED lights to create the feeling of chaos inside the movie complex.

These are Views of a more developed concept model . In this development, I created bridges(yellow) extending into the theaters, bars, and flood plaza.

Inverse explosion

I went back to the beginning of the class to my concept, Explosions.
So I created an inverse explosion, the impact of explosion on the ground, which deforms the ground and raise the level of the ground.

I created this off the model, concept plans. The void created by the explosion in the model is shown in gray in these concept plans.

Since an explosion is all over the place, so are my theater, bar, main elevator core and food plaza. Spreading out from the core middle towards the edges of the property line

These are quick 3D models of the current conceptual plan. The 3D models shows a kinda of disorganization, which I'am really aiming towards because i want it to be very Deconstructivist. The square in the middle might become part of the final model because i'am planning to establish a food court at different levels

Since I have been having problems creating a design for my theater and trying to fit everything into a mushroom cloud shape. i have decided to flatten the form of the mushroom cloud and use it in plan view. So in a sense the explosion is colliding with the property line and having a ripple effect backwards.

I went to the theater this weekend to watch a movie and this time I actually measured the dimensions of the biggest room and the smallest room near my area. I almost got in trouble taking dimensions with a laser but i was done and had the info.

Most of the theater in my area are long and narrow with seating to the side and a walkway in the middle, so im revolving my design around the theater room layout.

The final concept i created was the actual nuclear explosion itself and thought about having different buildings with different uses and having them connect through a series of bridges. I also represented the cloud spread at a smaller scale on the bottom.

I toke the explosion concept a bit further and thought about the spreading out of the clouds from the epicenter of the explosion.

These were some of my initial study model, when creating these study model I thought about the sound wave explosion.

Which building typology you are researching ?

Movie Theaters like the UFA Cinema Center, very deconstructive.

Why are you researching this building typology ?

I'am researching these types of building because i feel movie theater have lost their touch when creating a multiplex. Most movie theaters just consist of a food stand and the movie room but none have tried to innovate.

What is the specialty of this building type you would like to research i.e. museum for dance, school for digital media.....

I want the movie viewer not just to engage the movie but also engage the building and have a unique experience. Also trying to bring back the fun of going to a movie complex.

What are the examples that you will be researching.. list the examples (10 examples)
Almeda
Balboa Theater
Bengt Starlight Theater
Bijlmer Park Theater
National Grand Theater
Oslo Opera House
Vila Joiosa theater
Winspear Opera House
Wyly Theater
Zhuhai Opera House

What are your goals for working with this building type?

My goals for working on this building type is to create a more friendly environment for movie watchers and understand the complexity of organizing and designing a multiplex theater

What are the program elements that you see included at this point in your building? (may evolve once more research is done)

Private theater screening and/or family activity

Where is the sun coming from?
The sun is coming from the East of the site, which you can see in the below link

http://citytechballaz.blogspot.com/

Where is the approach?(Pedestrian and vehicular)
Public transportation is pretty far but walkable, a view of the public transportation can be found in the link below

Is there a change in grade?
Yes, there is a change in a grade about 10' from West to East.

Are there Views?
At ground floor there are not that many view because in one side there is the anchor for the bridge and on the opposite side there is a path to the Brooklyn bridge, but after 50' in the air I have views to the Brooklyn Bridge.

Is there open space and how will it be used?
There is open space and most of the open space will be used for public theater view and as a park.

What are the heights of the surrounding buildings?
At the NW of the site we have a 10 story building and at the SE there is a 13 story building.

Does this interfere with your building?
The 13 story building on the SE of the site cast a huge shadow on the site but this is a good thing for me because it keeps my theater in the dark.

How do you want your building to impact the neighborhood?
Since my concept is explosion im going to have a huge impact on the site because the surrounding neighborhood is very quite but its also very noise due to the highway near the site. I'am also trying to create almost like a Ying Yang effect because theaters need silence but at the same time the area is noisy
